Coaching for Doctors

Professor Dorothy Breen

I have over 30 years of clinical experience as a doctor, researcher and educator in the Irish and Australian healthcare systems. I have always been involved in quality improvement and clinical leadership both in practice and academia which led me to avail of formal coaching throughout my career. I have found this to be enormously beneficial in both my personal and professional life.

I am also a qualified coach and mentor and have significant experience coaching doctors. Doctors are currently facing enormous pressures in their lives with unprecedented demands on their time and services. I believe that through coaching, doctors can recalibrate and take concrete steps towards their desired life and career goals no matter what system they work in. Coaching for doctors conducted by a doctor who is also trained as a coach, is a unique opportunity to address the growing dissatisfaction in medicine one person at a time.

Testimonials

"I knew little about coaching when I embarked on a series of four sessions late last year. I quickly understood these were not counselling or therapy sessions! I was intrigued by the nature of the process, whereby thoughts and ideas were non-directively encouraged and allowed to flow. And through this discourse I connected with mostly forgotten interests and aspects of myself that in turn let to clarity of purpose I had struggled to otherwise achieve. This was enormously worthwhile and effective. Thank you."

HSE Regional Clinical Director, South West

"My coaching sessions with Prof Dorothy Breen were an invaluable and enlightening experience. The increased self-awareness from the guided introspection has benefitted me greatly in several aspects of my professional life. Prof Breen is an exceptionally skilled coach. I have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone wishing to advance their personal or professional development."

Emergency Medicine Trainee

"The coaching was hugely beneficial for me and in a way that wasn't expected. I thought the sessions would be focused on producing goals for me within my career. On the contrary, discussions with Prof Breen helped me to change the way that  I approach my job. Between sessions I started to value my time more on a personal level and to structure and prioritise. Prof Breen was extremely attentive and a fantastic listener. After several prompts to encourage me to find solutions to challenges, I was struggling with she would summarise in an incredibly insightful manner. Prof Breen was also very flexible and understanding of the constraints of the job. I would recommend investment in these sessions."
